Yes BUT. This specific desk is in a library so a parent that needs to use a library computer can do their work and have a little ease in managing their kiddo. In a library environment this is less productivity culture bullshit and more 'oh this is a fantastic solution to a difficult situation library staff see 8 times a day'. Is it still productivity culture bullshit because this parent may not have affordable childcare or internet available to them? Yes. Am I glad it exists in a library environment to fill a demonstrated need? Hell yeah.

This is all completely true and correct, of course, but on the topic of changes that irreversibly change a child’s body, prithee, go and talk to a fucking ballet dancer.

If you start ballet at 16, you are too old to ever expect to be able to do it seriously. If you start at 12 you’re too old. If you want to do ballet as a serious thing, as a career, you need to start at like eight years old or even younger, because your bones and joints need to be trained while they’re still flexible in order for you to be able to perform many of the required motions and stances of ballet. In particular, you need to be able to perform turnout of the hips, but all of your joints in your legs and feet will be affected, and this irreversibly changes your body.

And yet! Nobody talks about this as a negative thing! Little girls say they want to be ballet dancers, and if their parents have enough money, that’s what they get to be! Does it cause problems in later life? Yeah, sometimes! Often, even! But nobody talks about that because it’s a thing for cis people to do and so naturally it’s all fine!

Go and talk to a fucking ballet dancer.

Almost every soccerplayer in the world has a shortening of the back of the thigh muscle that will cause pain as they age.
Most develop severe knee problems by the age of 30.

People don’t age out of sports in general around 30 because they’ve “passed their prime physical condition” in the sense that age has taken it’s toll, but in the sense that the sport itself has taken it’s toll.

And yet, no one is advocating against letting children play sports.

My brother started playing PeeWee football at 10 years old. TEN. And you can call it ‘flag football’ or ‘no tackle football’ or 'limited contact all you want, they’re putting 10 year Olds in a helmet and pads because it’s a contact sport.

It will always be, accidentally or on purpose, a contact sport.

He played until his college team interfered with his education, and then quit. He was 20. For ten years, he played football. He had 2 major concussions that I know of. One required hospitalization, one required round the clock monitoring.

That’s what we know about.

And from what we now know about CTE and traumatic brain injury, that second severe concussion was enough to escalate his risk of Altzheimers, dementia and associated disorders. It may help explain his extreme anxiety in his early twenties. It might have contributed to his depressive episodes.

By the age of 19, his choice of sport may have changed him far more than hormone blockers or a binder. How many people argue boys shouldn’t be able to make that choice?

“Vampire facials”, which many people think is needling but is actually far, far worse, refers to platelet-rich plasma facials, in which blood is taken from a patient, processed in a centrifuge to extract the plasma and then re-injected it into the face. It’s supposed to make the skin “heal” itself because of platelets or some shit, giving you a more youthful look. Kim K helped make it popular after it was on her show but I know she also supposedly regrets it.

It’s uh, controversial to say the least. And not just because it sounds like painful bullshit but because lack of regulation for this sort of thing has lead to a couple of cases of HIV transmission happening.

The penis version is that they’re doing the exact same thing, taking plasma from themselves or a donor and injecting it into the penile tissue, supposedly to treat erectile dysfunction, but a lot of the men doing this are doing it just to get a girthier look.

And if you think I hate knowing all this, you’d be right.

I'm not sure what kind of back alley quackery these people are doing that's getting them HIV, but Platelet Rich Plasma Injections are very much an accepted therapy for many things, including: Post-surgical recovery, cancer treatment, musculoskeletal injury (such as tendon, ligament, muscle, or joint injuries), chronic pain/inflammation such as arthritis, and many other conditions relating to soft tissue damage.

The platelets are only ever harvested from the patients own blood. Using donor blood not only exposes the patient to additional risks relating to handling, but also poses a risk of a reactions to a foreign substance. Anyone using donor blood is doing some back alley quackery.

I understand shitting on the absurdity of rich people is fun, but spreading medical disinformation is not, at least not for people working in that field. This is the kind of stuff that scares patients, and could potentially make them refuse treatment.
